Establishing "union shop", as opposed to "open shop", is one of our key non-economic bargaining priorities. Why?
A union shop means that all workers become dues-paying members of the union within some time of beginning their position. In an open shop, workers are not required to pay dues or join their union.
Union Shop means we're all in this together. Open Shop leaves us divided. And we know that united we win, divided we beg.
Union shop is how we enforce our contract wins. Northwestern opposes union shop because they don't want us to have the power to enforce our contract.
Union shop means we all contribute to the costs of contract enforcement via dues, and we all benefit from union protections.
With union shop, every worker can vote for our shared future, and contributes their fair share.
All unions at Northwestern have union shop, including our graduate co-workers. Academic unions all across the country have union shop. We're uniting to foster a greater, more inclusive future for academia.
