Northwestern Postdocs & Research Associates: Vote UNION YES on August 25-26th
We have a clear choice in this election.
Voting “YES” means Northwestern administration will be legally required to negotiate with our elected postdoc/research associate representatives over critical issues like workplace protections, benefits, and pay. It also means that improvements we win—or benefits we maintain—must be secured through a legally binding and enforceable contract. By voting YES, we’ll join over 100,000 unionized academic workers across the country who are coming together to create more fair, just, and equitable research environments—and to fight for the future of science by ensuring sustainable, supportive careers in research.
Over the past few years—and through over a thousand conversations with postdocs and research associates at Northwestern—it has become clear that many of the challenges we face are widely shared across departments, schools, and campuses. These include growing obstacles for international scholars, insufficient avenues for addressing discrimination, bullying, and harassment, rising costs of living, unclear appointments, limited support and funding for visa applications and renewals, and ongoing concerns about job security and research funding. Together, these challenges create unnecessary stress and make it harder for us to focus on the high-quality research we came to Northwestern to pursue.
Joining together to Strengthen Our Workplace and Safeguard Research Funding
As things stand, Northwestern administrators make unilateral decisions about if, when, and how to address the challenges facing postdoctoral researchers and our broader research community. In light of recent uncertainties — including potential federal funding freezes, changes at the NIH, and other shifts at the national level — it remains unclear how researchers at institutions like Northwestern will be affected, or whether these changes will have lasting negative impacts on the research enterprise nationwide. These uncertainties make it even more urgent for us to unionize and have a collective voice in shaping our future.
No matter how these external changes unfold, collective bargaining would give us a seat at the table and the power to negotiate protections for ourselves. We need that voice to ensure that, regardless of what happens, postdoc positions remain dignified roles where we can continue our research without sacrificing our careers or personal lives. With strong turnout and support in our vote, we’ll be in the best possible position to negotiate a strong contract that not only improves our workplace rights, compensation, and benefits, but also provides the stability and security we need to focus on producing high-quality research.

Joining a local and national movement to safeguard science and protect our rights
By unionizing, we become part of a growing movement of over 100,000 graduate students, postdocs, research associates, and research staff nationwide who have already won meaningful improvements through collective bargaining. We’ll be standing alongside our already unionized graduate student colleagues in NUGW-UE to promote a positive, unified vision for the future of research—both at Northwestern and across the country. Bringing together nearly 5,000 researchers here at Northwestern will strengthen our entire academic community and help create a safer, more secure workplace for everyone.
UE academic workers—at Northwestern and other institutions—have already led efforts to confront federal funding cuts and attacks on international scholars. From organizing rallies and town halls to contacting elected officials and hosting Know Your Rights trainings, we’ve shown what’s possible when we work collectively. By unionizing with UE, we join tens of thousands of academic workers nationwide who are taking action to defend research, protect our rights, and push back against policies that threaten the future of higher education.
When we organize together, we all move forward. Gains won by one group of academic workers often set new standards for others. We’ve already seen this at Northwestern: after graduate workers in NUGW-UE won their first union contract—including a 22% raise to their base stipend—the University raised postdoc salaries shortly afterward. This is just one example of how collective action benefits the entire academic research community. By standing together, we’re not only improving our own working conditions—we’re helping raise the bar for researchers across the country.
